Concentration
Concentration is an act of will. The disciple puts an idea into one’s mind, within the consciousness, and strives to direct and concentrate one’s attention only on that, and does not deviate into external thoughts and ideas. You could practice concentration no matter what kind of work you’re doing. During the act of praying, for example, you must concentrate in such a way that you must think and experience the prayer which is being pronounced. When the scholar is occupied with science work he or she is also practising concentration. When doing occult gymnastic exercises, you should be concentrated and follow every movement. Do not think about anything else but the exercise itself. Likewise, when you are breathing, the thought should be concentrated on the process of breathing – the way you inhale, how the air enters the lungs and brings the vital energy, which permeates into the blood and thence it spreads all over the body. In general, you can practice concentration no matter what kind of work you are doing without distracting yourself by external thoughts. The studying of Mathematics and Geometry could serve as a good method for concentration. For that reason, Phytagoras required from his disciples to study Mathematics at first, thus they would get used to concentrate in a natural way. This was practiced in all spiritual schools. Besides Mathematics, Master Beinsa Douno also recommended Music as a method for concentration.
